No surprise here: life is full of challenges. Personal. Professional. Communal. How each of us respond to those challenges — individually and collectively — tells much about the kind of person and kind of community we are, or hope to be.
The way I see it, Sanibel and Captiva are together one community, and one very caring community of people helping people.
If you live here, you know what I’m saying. If you hope to live here someday, our social fabric is one of the many best reasons to make that move.
Here’s an alphabetical list of the first five stars of our community-based services (more to come next month!). There isn’t a favorite here, but these organizations help make all of our lives better.
BIG Arts. Arguably the top cultural center of the Islands in a breathtaking setting, BIG Arts presents world-renowned artists, musicians, writers, film makers, theater exhibits and more. P.S. BIG stands for Barrier Island Group!
Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium. The only museum in the U.S. totally dedicated to shells and mollusks. All-new, educational and fun, the Shell Museum is amazing for young and old. Hands-on, interactive and awesome.
Charitable Foundation of the Islands. CFI excels in supporting other not-for-profits with valuable and vital grants and support. In addition, CFI promotes numerous opportunities to improve how the islands can grow and prosper, today and tomorrow.
Community Housing and Resources. Affordable housing is a challenge almost everywhere in our country. On Sanibel and Captiva, Community Housing and Resources dedicates itself to fill that void and improve quality of life for all.
FISH of SanCap. FISH (Friends in Service Here) is all about neighbors helping neighbors — helping to create, implement and monitor a plan of support for individuals and families of all ages via nutrition, education, finance and older adult services.
