LIKE A RED CARPET LEADING TO PARADISE.
The sun rose on the morning of September 29, 2022 to a world upside down in Southwest Florida. The day before, Hurricane Ian shredded our coastal islands and mainland with the kind of destruction you’d see in disaster movies. Among the many profound images were those of the Sanibel Causeway, which suffered devastating damage that at first glance, suggested access to the islands by vehicle could be months or even years away.
In a feat of engineering no less than amazing, the battered and broken Causeway was back trafficking just 12 days later. For all of us who live or work on Sanibel and Captiva, it was truly remarkable and frankly amazing.
Fast forward to 30 months and $328 million later, the Sanibel Causeway — bridges and islands — officially reopened close to 100% job done this May 1. Today, extensive protective measures have been put in place to create a user-friendly, beach park type atmosphere, one that’ll ideally prove far more resistant and resilient to storm surges and Category Crazy wind velocities.
Traverse the Causeway today and you’ll enjoy beautiful San Carlos Bay views, along with manicured beaches, attractive landscaping and (currently) free parking for 800 or so cars and trucks. Those three miles from island to mainland, and back again, look and travel better than ever. Our thanks to all in government and private industry to make this happen significantly ahead of schedule!
For those of us who love our coastal lifestyles, the Sanibel Causeway unfolds like a red carpet to paradise. The natural beauty that surrounds you as you go can take your breath away. Whether it’s beach-goers or boaters, kite surfers or paddleboarders, dolphins or pelicans, sunrise or sunset, steady or slow traffic — open the windows and enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas of this very special place on earth.
